The Ligurian Alps Natural Park<\/strong> is the westernmost protected area of Liguria. It covers an area of 60 square kilometres (about 23 square miles) near the border with the French department of the Maritime Alps. It contains three valleys: Val Nervia, Valle Argentina and Valle Arroscia, and seven mountain municipalities in the province of Imperia: Rocchetta Nervina, Pigna, Triora, Montegrosso Pian Latte, Rezzo, Mendatica and Cosio d’Arroscia.<\/p>\n

The fact that the Alpine peaks, which reach altitudes near or above 2,000 metres, are so close to the Mediterranean has favoured the development of micro-environments rich in very interesting species of flora, particularly in the Monte Toraggio and Pietravecchia areas.<\/p>\n

The wooded areas from Pian Cavallo (populated with larch, beech and Scots pine) to Rezzo (beech), the Gerbonte Forest (spruce, Scots pine, maple, larch and beech) and the Testa d’Alpe Forest (silver fir, mountain maple, Scots pine) represent a very precious forest heritage, the largest in Liguria. The ridge consisting of Mount Saccarello, Mount Front\u00e8 and Mount Monega, characterised by meadows and pastures, is still the site of age-old herding activities.<\/p>\n

Everyone can enjoy the beauty of the park<\/strong> by taking part in the guided tours organised to spot local wildlife (birds of prey, red-billed choughs, chamois goats, marmots and roe deer) and admire the spectacular late spring-summer flowers; don’t miss the flowering of the largest area of rhododendrons in Europe on the slopes of Mount Saccarello.<\/p>\n
